If you’re like me, wintertime doesn’t drum up a lot of excitement for going outdoors. Unless you’re into the common winter sports, winter is the time of year you plant yourself firmly in front of your fireplace while you binge watch episodes of your favorite TV show.
But, even if winter isn’t your favorite time of the year, there’s still fun to be had! An easy excuse to get out of the house and have some fun during the winter is attending a local winter festival. Think ice skating rinks, roasting marshmallows over an open fire, horse-drawn carriages and more. It may be cold, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun!
Clark Park Winter Carnival – Feb. 17
Clark Park in Detroit is hosting its annual Clark Park Winter Carnival from 12-4 p.m. There will be food, outdoor games, music, ice skating, a petting zoo, a horse-drawn carriage, marshmallow roasting, face painting and more. Stick around after the activities for the Clark Park Winter Carnival Hockey Classic at 6:30 p.m. If you’re in the Southfield area, you can enjoy this day of indoor and outdoor activities for the whole family. There will be a DJ spinning live music, naturalists from Oakland County Parks and the Huron Clinton Metroparks providing lessons on the environment, crafts and games inside the Southfield Pavilion and horse-drawn sled rides to the Southfield Sports Arena for free ice skating. There will also be a sport kite team called Team Sky-FX on site providing kite demonstrations. Escape the mundanity of winter by heading out to the Oak Park Winterfest. Carriage rides, reindeer pens, ice skating, photo ops, cookie decoration, face painting, s’mores by the fire, chili and hot chocolate (while supplies last) will all be available from 1-4 p.m. at the Oak Park Community Center. As one of many Polar Plunge events around the country, the Detroit Polar Plunge is a benefit for Special Olympics Michigan. Sign up to be a part of the action and take a plunge in some ice cold water, all to benefit a good cause! You can even sign up with others as a team to increase your fundraising efforts. This event will be held at the Belle Isle Boat House.
